1 Superman The American cultural icon

2 Invention The first Superman character created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster was not a hero, but rather a bald telepathic villain named "The Superman", bent on dominating the entire world. It appeared in the short story "The Reign of the Super-Man" from Science Fiction #3. The story did not sell, forcing the two to reposition their character on the right side of the law.

3 Later, Siegel came upon the more familiar version of the character. Then they began a six- year quest to find a publisher. Titling it The Superman, Siegel and Shuster offered it to Consolidated Book Publishing. Although they received an encouraging letter, Consolidated never again published comic books. Finally, in 1938, the editor Vin Sullivan of the National Allied Publications (the primary precursor of DC Comics ) chose it as the cover feature for National's Action Comics #1 and published their works.DC Comics Sources: History of Superman - Wikipedia, the free encyclopediaHistory of Superman - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jerry_Siegel

4 The original story The original story of Superman relates that he was born Kal-El on the planet Krypton, before being rocketed to Earth as an infant by his scientist father Jor-El, moments before Krypton's destruction. Discovered and adopted by a Kansas farmer and his wife, the child is raised as Clark Kent and imbued with a strong moral compass. Very early he started to display superhuman abilities, which upon reaching maturity he resolved to use for the benefit of humanity. Superman lives among humans as a "mild- mannered reporter" for the Metropolis newspaper Daily Planet (Daily Star in the earliest stories). There he works alongside reporter Lois Lane, with whom he is romantically linked.Daily Planet Sources : Superman - Wikipedia, the free encyclopediaSuperman - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
