Plot is the series of related events that make up a story or drama. Exposition (characters introduced, setting, background info, conflicts) Rising action (conflicts, suspense) Climax (turning point—after this, everything changes) Falling action (action of story winds down) Resolution (Conclusion)

1. Place - geographical location. Where is the action of the story taking place? 2. Time - When is the story taking place? (historical period, time of day, year, etc) 3. Weather conditions - Is it rainy, sunny, stormy, etc? 4. Social conditions - What is the daily life of the characters like? Does the story contain local colour (writing that focuses on the speech, dress, mannerisms, customs, etc. of a particular place)? 5. Mood or atmosphere - What feeling is created at the beginning of the story? Is it bright and cheerful or dark and frightening?

Chronological plot is… events are told in the order they happen In medias res is… story starts in the middle of the action without exposition Foreshadow is…planting of hints/clue about what will happen later in the story What element do all plots need to have in order to create tension? Suspense What three plot devices are used to achieve this element of tension? Mystery Dilemma Repetition
