9 Jonah 1.1-3 11 Now the word of the LORD came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, 2 “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it, for their evil has come up before me.” 3 But Jonah rose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD. He went down to Joppa and found a ship going to Tarshish. So he paid the fare and went on board, to go with them to Tarshish, away from the presence of the LORD.

10 Nineveh!

12 Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, three days’ journey in breadth.

16 We can easily understand the events of the Book of Jonah; but what does it mean?
Why was it written down and included in the Scriptures? Possible Ways of “reading” the book: • History • Parable • Allegory • Prophecy

17 What we know by reading the book:
• Jonah was a historical prophet, and the events of the narrative are all legitimately possible • Jonah is called to leave his land and go out into the world to a nation he feared and despised • The Lord is God in those other places; people are responsible to Him and all things are under His control • The peoples of those lands are more responsive to God than His own prophet

18 The final question: • “Do you do well?”
