WHAT EXACTLY IS DIABETES? Diabetes is a condition where your body has trouble balancing how much sugar, or glucose, is in your blood stream. You need glucose in your body for energy. Insulin is like a key to unlock your cells and let glucose into your bloodstream. Your pancreas is responsible for producing Insulin.

DIFFERENT KINDS OF DIABETES Type 1 Also known as “Insulin Dependent” Body does not make insulin Must be given through an injection Occurs more often in children and young adults Type 2 Body makes some insulin but not enough Body prevents insulin from working properly More common in adults over 40 But can occur in children and young adults due to obesity There are other kinds of Diabetes such as Prediabetes, and Gestational Diabetes

WHAT CAUSES DIABETES? We don’t know Risk factors increase your chance of getting type 2 diabetes Being overweight High blood pressure Family history of diabetes Being over 45 years of age Having low activity level

BEFORE AND AFTER Symptoms… Tired all the time Always thirsty Sudden weight loss Blurry vision Numb/tingling in hands or feet Wounds that won’t heal Urinating often Problems with sex If left untreated… Damage your blood vessels and nerves Heart attack/ stroke Blindness Kidney disease Nerve disease Infections Problems with legs and feet
