1 The Distributive Property
Lesson 3-1 Pages The Distributive Property

2 What you will learn! How to use the Distributive Property to write equivalent numerical expressions. How to use the Distributive Property to write equivalent algebraic expressions.

3 Equivalent Expressions
Vocabulary Equivalent Expressions

4 What you really need to know!
The expressions 2(1 + 5) and 2•1 + 2•5 are equivalent expressions because they have the same value, 12. The Distributive Property combines addition and multiplication.

5 What you really need to know!
The Distributive Property also combines subtraction and multiplication. Rewrite subtraction as addition expressions.

6

7 Example 1: Use the Distributive Property to write each expression as an equivalent expression. Then evaluate the expression. 4(5 + 8) 4•5 + 4•8 52

8 Example 2: Use the Distributive Property to write each expression as an equivalent expression. Then evaluate the expression. (6 + 9)2 6•2 + 9•2 30

9 Example 3: North Country Rivers of York, Maine, offers one-day white-water rafting trips on the Kennebec River. The trip costs $69 per person, and wet suits are $15 each. Write two equivalent expressions to find the total cost of one trip for a family of four if each person uses a wet suit. ( )4 or 69•4 + 15•4 $336

10 Example 4: Use the Distributive Property to write each expression as an equivalent algebraic expression. 2(x + 4) 2x + 2•4 2x + 8

11 Example 5: Use the Distributive Property to write each expression as an equivalent algebraic expression. (y + 3)6 y6 + 3•6 6y + 18

12 Example 6: Use the Distributive Property to write each expression as an equivalent algebraic expression. 4(x - 2) 4x - 4•2 4x - 8 4x + -8

13 Example 7: Use the Distributive Property to write each expression as an equivalent algebraic expression. -2(n - 3) -2n - -2•3 -2n - -6 -2n + 6
