1 Plessy v. Ferguson By: Kaylla Vaughn, Shyla Woodworth, Nick Zinni, Whitney Wallace

2 Dates ❏ In 1896 the supreme court ruled that racially separate facilities did not violate the United States Constitution. ❏ In 1890 the Louisiana Law required railroads to have equal but separate seating for white and black races. ❏ On June 7, 1892 Homer Plessy agreed to be arrested for refusing to move out of a whites seat.

3 Scenario ❖ Plessy attempted to sit in an all white railroad car. He refused to sit in an all black railroad car and, for that he was arrested. He was arrested for going against an 1890 Louisiana Law that pushed “separate but equal.” ❖ When the trial came along Judge John H. Ferguson, Plessy was found guilty. Stating that the law was reasonable based on custom, usage, and tradition among the state.

7 Our Documents This is our real document it is the title page of the Supreme Court case. It has the only persons name who was against putting Plessy in prison signed on the bottom.

8 Background on the case. Plessy was 1/16th black, he was more white than black. Plessy went to sit on the white train car, because he was more white than he was black.
