Biotechnology Program At Ivy Tech Community College, Lafayette Krishna K Mishra, Program Chair
2
What is Biotechnology? Biotechnology is the science of using living organisms, or products of living organisms, for human benefit- that is, to make a product or solve a problem. It is a fairly new discipline It is rapidly changing
3
Objective of Biotechnology Program at Ivy Tech Total 5 campuses of Ivy Tech offer the Biotech program. 1)Bloomington, 2) Indianapolis, 3) Lafayette, 4) South Bend, 5) Terre Haute The objective of the program is to prepare students to work in life science laboratory settings. The program emphasis is on learning applications such as analysis of biological molecules, fermentation, recombinant DNA, generation of cell culture, and safe operation of laboratory equipment.
4
Associate of Applied Science AAS (Associate of Applied Science) This is a two year program that prepares students for careers, career changes and career advancement. AAS students can also transfers to a four year institution provided they fulfil transfer requirements. 30% is general education, and 70 % professional/technical education General education courses equip the students with problem solving, communication, scientific and mathematical skills to compete successfully in job market. Professional/technical courses equip the student with the skill to obtain employment and to advance in the workforce.
5
Biotech Internship (BIOT 280) is required for AAS: (240 h) The internship and CO-OP program are designed to prepare BIOT-AAS degree seeking students for a professional career by integrating and enhancing academic study with work experience. internship program strengthen the quality and performance of students entering in their career field. Internship program help them to start looking the places/labs they may be interested for their work Graduates from the program are able to work with scientist and technicians to implement biotechnology and perform laboratory tasks including data analysis and experimental work
6
Associate of Science AS (Associate of Science) Prepares students for transfer to university for a bachelor’s degree. Students have mandatory requirement to finish transfer general education core (TGEC), which is consisted of 30 credit hours. Through articulation agreements with Indiana University- Purdue University Indianapolis, Ivy Tech graduates from this program can continue their studies for a bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology at IUPUI.
