5. FACTS for Ross and St. George Date of first students from both UFCVM – 2002 Total number of students completing clerkship training to date: 36/41 Projected # students to complete clerkship training in 2008: 9/11 (3/4 in May, 2 in Sept, 4/7 in December). 1 has been dismissed after the first 4 months- this being the only “ academic fatality” ever.

6. General Information Student success at UF dependent on quality of education at home school. Their enthusiasm is a plus. Not usually ready for the extreme time commitments we demand: busy service schedules, ICU duties, off-hour emergency, weekend ICU and treatments. They quickly fall into the routine.

8. Vital Needs Quarterback in Office of Student affairs. Complete faculty support. Everyone’s open-arms welcome. Respect for their efforts to get here.

9. Orientation Thorough orientation is ESSENTIAL. Covering: paperwork, computer use, security, protocols and more protocols. Orientation lasts 3 days covering all facets of the college. Those who join us in the Spring have requested a week long orientation. These new additions join our seniors – challenging, but we all work together “to make it happen” We provide a book: “Off-Shore Student Survival Guide” which targets all they need to know.

10. Issues They must feel welcomed. They must be treated the same as the UF students. Same entitlements to electives, holidays, etc. They are recognized as UF Senior Students –which includes the same academic demands. UF ID’s – same as other students at UF; no markers of different origin

11. More Issues The clinic leaders must assure that fairness applies across the board. Never designate these students as “off-shore”. Overcoming clinician bias is essential. Academic problems are handled the same as everyone else with the addition of our contacting the home school. They will fail any rotation where they fail to meet our standards. Language problems can slow them down; this situation require everyone’s patience.

12. Academic Difficulty Handled the same as with UF students. Failed rotations require repeat and sacrifice of vacation time. Of all of our off-shore students, only 2% of have failed a rotation. How about “dem apples?”

13. The Completion We have a special completion ceremony for them which is GREAT and much appreciated. Faculty participate Families invited. UF gifts given to them. Win-Win
