1
Density of Solids and Liquids Key Question: How can you find the density of a solid or liquid?
2
Properties of a Solid Density –ratio of mass to volume in a homogeneous mixture or substance –gives information about the “compactness” of a material –Formula: D= m/V
3
Does density depend on the size or shape of the material? Yes Does density depend on the type of the material? Yes How can density be used to identify a material? Use a Density Chart or compare to a substance with a known density
4
What are some other properties of solids?
5
Other Properties of Solids Hardness –measure of a substance’s resistance to scratching Elasticity –measure of a solid’s ability to return to its original size when stretched
6
Other Properties of Solids Brittleness –measures how easily a material will shatter Malleability –measures a solid’s ability to be pounded into thin sheets
7
Other Properties Solids Tensile strength –Measure of how much pulling a material can withstand
8
How can you find the density of a solid? D = m/V What is the density of a rock that has a mass of 300 kg and a volume of 500 cm 3 300kg / 500 cm 3 = 0.6 kg / cm 3
9
How can you find the density of a liquid? Use the same formula: If a fish tank holds 50L of water and the density of the water is 1g/mL what is the mass of the water in the fish tank? 50L = 50,000 mL 50,000 mL x 1 g/mL = m = VD 50,000g D = m/V
