Podcasts and videos BETT Technology Applications
2
What is a podcast? A series of audio programs (or video) You can subscribe to them They can be downloaded If you subscribe, this can happen automatically when a new episode is available Or streamed from the web or on your phone/tablet Can be on any topic Can be professional or amateur
3
Examples You can generally find podcasts either through iTunes, or through the podcast’s webpage. Learning English: http://www.eslpod.com/website/index_new.html Professional radio programs (npr) http://www.npr.org/rss/podcast/podcast_directory.php Topics such as sports, self-help, music, advice, comedy, hobbies, anything you can think of Easiest to browse via iTunes
4
Two ways to use in teaching First (and easiest) Have students listen to a podcast that you pick Can do in class or outside of class (easy to do on a phone) Make lessons around the podcast Second (and harder) Have students make their own podcasts They could record themselves Upload their recording to a website Students can listen to each other’s recordings
5
Using podcasts in teaching Advantages of listening to podcast: Can be learner or authentic speech Easy to create lesson with easy to listen to on a smartphone Can give extra listening practice You could create your own and have students subscribe Disadvantages of listening to podcasts Some are very long Most are advanced (unless you’re using one for ESL) You have to be specific when directing students to the proper site and episode Students may have technical difficulties
6
Creating podcasts in teaching Advantages of students creating a podcast Good, extra speaking practice Have to prepare beforehand They can listen to themselves and other students Disadvantages of creating a podcast: Many potential technical difficulties Need a place to host (to upload files) Need a program to record in Sound quality can vary greatly Audio files can get large very quickly
7
Creating podcasts - options Create a blog or a wiki and upload audio files that students create. (can record on phone and email or upload) Create your own webpage using a podcast host (could mean time and money though, and technology know-how)
8
Your thoughts? What do you see as the potential benefits of either having students listen to or create podcasts? What are some topics students could talk about, or skills they could practice? Discuss your opinions and ideas in small groups, and then be ready to share your ideas with the class.
9
Using videos Again – you can have students watch videos or create videos YouTube Video podcasts News clips Tv shows Commercials Movie clips or movies
10
Students creating videos Could create short videos using phones Easy to do as group project Can integrate vocabulary, grammar, cultural topics Can upload /send from phone to teacher or directly to a blog or a wiki Students can listen to themselves and others, and watch themselves speaking another language Need to practice to get video right Can think about scene, props, characters, dialogue
11
Your ideas? If you had your students make a video, what would you do? What lesson would it work well with and why/how? What would you get them to think about when creating the video?
