Assessment of Listening and Speaking Skills As communication skills improve and raise the self esteem of each student CBSE essentially desires that the students acquire proficiency in it by the time they leave the portals of the school. In the present day global market speaking and listening skills are considered to be the essential part of real life. Considering this CBSE has proposed to give 20% weightage in formative and summative assessments in the Assessment of Speaking and Listening skills. Therefore the Assessment of speaking and listening skills will be done formally at the term end examinations. Enhancing Listening Skills: tuning in to selective programs on the ‘BBC’, ‘National Geographic’ and ‘Discovery’ channels or other educative/informative channels on the TV gives good exposure to learners of language. Also, the students can be encouraged to speak in the English language during the study time at home.

GAVEL CLUB Teenagers are often more comfortable communicating electronically than speaking face to face. Yet many events in teenagers’ lives require interpersonal communication skills to be resolved successfully. Now, more than ever, they need guidance in developing their communication skills. Our school has introduced ‘Gavel Club’ a new program to help teens build effective listening, expression and communication skills. The Toastmasters youth communication program is designed especially for middle school students, offers a safe, engaging environment in which teens can help each other learn and practice these valuable communication skills. The program contains an entirely new set of materials designed to be used by professional Toastmasters, Teachers and Guidance Counselors, who mentor the young students. Indian School Alwadi Al Kabir has started the ‘Gavel Club’. At present we have two Gavel clubs operating. They have the same club officer titles, use the same communication track manuals and follow similar club meeting protocols. Gavel club members are not, however, referred to as Toastmasters; they are called “Gaveliers.” The materials are designed to be modular and flexible: Office Bearers can choose to present all the lessons or just parts of each module. Team leaders can modify any of the activities in the module or even create their own. Each module offers a wide variety of activities and can be adapted to almost any subject area. The good part of Gavel’s Club is that now it has become a part of our curriculum and will be held during school hours. The course fee for the year is 25 R.O. With this I come to the end of my discussion. Parents before I sign off please remember, ‘our’ child is the raw soil, it is for us to work together to shape the lives of ‘our’ children. Thank you
