Common Nouns A common noun is a person, place, or thing that is generic and not specific. –A common noun begins with a lowercase letter, unless it is the beginning of the sentence. The box slid across the floor. The boy ate a sandwich.

Find the common nouns. Mary bought a computer at the store.

Find the common nouns. The hungry dog ate his food quickly.

Find the common nouns. The flowers looked beautiful in the garden.

Proper Nouns A proper noun names a particular person, place, or thing. –Names of organizations, magazines, and newspapers are proper nouns. –Titles of books, songs, and works of art are also proper nouns. –Begin each proper noun with a capital letter. I would like to visit New York City. Mary read the book entitled Poppy.

Abbreviations An abbreviation is a shortened form of a word. A period is used after most abbreviations. –Remember to capitalize the first letter of abbreviations for titles and the first letter of abbreviations for proper nouns. Titles of people Mr. (mister) Capt. (captain) Dr. (doctor) AddressesSt. (street) Rd. (road Blvd. (boulevard) Directions in Addresses N. (north) S. (south) E. (east) W. (west)
