Landforms The Everglades are made up of one landform. Pa-hay-oke is what the Indians call grassy waters. Flat area of land (grasslands). Limestone rocks make up the ground in the Everglades.

Culture There are lots of cultures that went to the Everglades. American Indians were the first people to come to the Everglades. In the early 1500’s Spanish explorers came to Florida looking for gold. Marjory Stoneman Douglas was one of the first people to see the need to protect the area.

Waterways The Everglades biggest problem is the loss of water. A canal system is draining the water from the area. Water loss is changing the parks ecosystem. The canals also change the water flow from Lake Okeechobee to the Everglades.

Rocks and Minerals Rocks and minerals found in Everglades National Park date back millions of years. Millions of years ago, glaciers covered most of North America. The resulting spherical grain of limestone are called ooids. Shells, mud and sand hardened at the bottom of the ocean and formed limestone. Above this rock layer are the wetlands and grasslands that make up the Everglades.
