4 MODELING THE Earth ’ s MOON PHASES - Mini Lab Problem: To create an ACCURATE model of the Earth-Moon system and the phases of the moon, Materials- Each student will receive only 8 chocolate cookies with white filling (Oreo ® ). Safety- FOOD ALLERGIES, wash hands before and after!!, wait for permission, sharp toothpick Procedure: 1) Use the cookies to make the models of the following phases of the moon: a) New moonb) Waxing Crescentc)First Quarter d) Waxing Gibbous e) Full Moonf) Waning Gibbous g) Last/Third Quarterh) Waning Crescent 2) Separate your cookies carefully, so that ½ of the cookie has ALL of the frosting and the other ½ of the cookie has NO frosting. *Use the side of one cookie to “cut away” some of the white filling to create each of the moons. 3) Using the provided placemat, place your completed cookies in the correct order. 3) Put the cookie models IN ORDER in relation to the Earth and SUN, use the sun as your guide. 4) You need MY approval of your model before you have permission to “munch on the moon”. 5) Draw in and label each of the moon phases that you created on the back side of the sheet. CLEAN UP YOUR AREA!!

5 Phases of the moon as seen in the Northern Hemisphere

6 Position 1Position 2Position 3Position 4 New Moon Completely (or almost completely) dark. Waxing Crescent A small sliver of light on the right. First Quarter (or Half) Moon The right half of the Moon is light. Waxing Gibbous Three quarters of the right side of the Moon is light. The light is in the shape of a humpback (which is what the word “gibbous” means!) Position 5Position 6Position 7Position 8 Full Moon The entire Moon is bright. Waning Gibbous Three quarters of the left side of the Moon is light. Third Quarter (also Half) Moon The left half of the Moon is now light. Waning Crescent A small sliver of light now appears on the left side. What each of the cookies should look like with the correct lunar (moon) phase.
