War m Up: S et up your notebook page. In your Literature book, turn to pg. 46 and read the paragraph under the question, "Can first impressions be trusted?" Then complete the "List it" activity underneath in your notes.

Turn in your Literature book to pg. 48 To day's story is called "The Good Deed." Predict what this story might be about. In this story, the main character will deal with conflict...let's review...what is conflict?

conflict - the problem or struggle a character faces in the story.

internal conflict (man vs. himself) A conflict that occurs within the character, such as making an important decision or facing a fear.

external conflict A conflict that occurs outside of the character, such as nature, a physical obstacle or another character. man vs. natureman vs. societyman vs. man

man vs. nature Some force in nature creates an obstacle for the character.

man vs. society A conflict that occurs when a character disagrees with societal values, laws or beliefs.

man vs. man A conflict that occurs when a character has an argument, disagreement or some sort of struggle with another character.

Consider this example... When I first saw Raoul, I could tell we weren't going to get along. He wore a jacket and a tie to school! I figured he was a real snob... Give an example of an internal and an external conflict that might develop as a result of this first impression.

Read with a purpose: As we read "The Good Deed," discover how someone who is sight impaired can help those who can see examine the world in different and new ways. Also look for various conflicts that occur throughout the story. Complete the sheet as you follow along in the story.
