2
Tim Keller – How Society Addresses Sin “I know the words sin and sinner carry a lot of cultural baggage, and I can understand why people cringe when they hear a Christian use them. The words have unfortunately been used
3
to marginalize and objectify those who are not Christians. It’s easy to say, “You’re not only someone who disagrees with me, you’re a sinner”. It’s a word that has been used to climb up to a false high moral ground and cast judgment on those below.
4
If you are sinner (but, by implication, I am not) then instead of having an actual discussion and placing myself genuinely in the path of your questions, I marginalize you.” Obviously, I believe this understanding of sin is wrong. The proper biblical
5
understanding of sin is much more radical and far-reaching. It can never be used as a weapon, because it will recoil on anyone who tries to deploy it that way. Biblically, no one can escape the verdict of being a sinner. And that is the point of these two stories. (Samaritan Woman and Nicodemus)
6
John 3:1-38 Now there was a Pharisee, a man named Nicodemus who was a member of the Jewish ruling council. 2 He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God.
7
For no one could perform the signs you are doing if God were not with him.” 3 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.”
8
4 “How can someone be born when they are old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!”
9
5 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. 6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. 7 You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’
10
Why does Jesus tell Nicodemus he must be born again but offers the Samaritan woman living water?
11
Stereotypes of “Born Again” Dramatic conversion required for salvation Only for really messed up people who later give great testimonies Only a select few are born again Feels religious
12
Biblical “Born Again” Jn3:5 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. 6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. 7 You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’
13
Biblically Jesus is saying that everyone needs to be born again but the term is especially applicable for people who are self sufficient, self made starters, and high achievers.
14
A Close Look at Nicodemus Civic Leader Member of Sanhedrin – Assembly of Hebrew High Court Prosperous, moral, and religious
15
Devout and upstanding Pharisee Successful All together admirable
16
Rather than pressing Nicodemus on his lack of satisfaction (“I can give you living water”), he presses him on his smug self-satisfaction (“You must be born again”)
17
Deeper Understanding of Sin “Sin is looking to something else besides God for our salvation. It is putting yourself in the place of God, becoming your own savior and lord.” (Read Keller Quote)
18
How does Jesus press into you? Lack of Satisfaction or a Smug Self Satisfaction? Discuss
19
In other words, what sort of approach does Jesus need to take with you? Offer “Living Water” or “Be Born Again?
20
Jesus’ Point Nicodemus and the Samaritan woman are equal sinners in need of grace. And so are we.
21
Sinners of Two Kinds Samaritan woman stays in control by breaking the law. (Rule Breakers) Nicodemus stays in control by keeping law. (Rule Keepers)
22
Which one are you?
23
So what? What do we do? 1.Stop looking to false forms of salvation. 2.If only I had … ? 3.Confession & Repentance
24
Receive the Jesus/Gospel Jesus thirst/became vulnerable – “Living Water” Jesus’ resurrection – “Born Again”
