1 Queen’s University Initiative to Reduce Harmful Drinking Main Components Process Objectives Short-Term Outcome Objectives Long-Term Outcome Objectives Queen’s _PLM ver4; December 2004 To regularly review, and, if necessary, revise and update, the Campus Alcohol Policy. To actively disseminate and promote the Campus Alcohol Policy to all key stakeholders. To inform all key stakeholders of the salient rules and regulations contained within the Liquor Licence Act of Ontario. To develop and implement an awareness campaign that promotes healthy lifestyles for students. As a component of the healthy lifestyles campaign, to develop and implement educational programs that promote low-risk drinking practices among students. To expand and promote the Campus Obser- vation Room service. To advocate for and promote high profile non-alcohol events on campus throughout the academic year -- with a special focus on orientation week and alumni weekend. To recruit and train student leaders to provide alcohol educational programming. To identify key people, both on and off campus, interested in working collaboratively on the Queen’s Initiative to Reduce Harmful Drinking. To create, maintain, and promote an on- campus clearinghouse for the dissemination of alcohol related resources to students, staff, and faculty. To promote the variety of on and off campus counseling and support services available to students. To regularly, both formally and informally, survey Queen’s students re their alcohol and other drug use and their attitudes and opinions on various alcohol related issues. To disseminate formal and informal survey data to all stakeholders within the campus community. To monitor and, if necessary, revise and update the Queen’s Initiative to Reduce Harmful Drinking. To promote and disseminate the Queen’s Initiative to Reduce Harmful Drinking throughout the campus community. To increase the awareness of, and compliance with, the Campus Alcohol Policy. To increase the campus community’s awareness of the Liquor Licence Act of Ontario in general and alcohol related liability in particular. To decrease the number and severity of alcohol related incidents. To maximize the integrity and increase the accountability of the Queen’s Initiative to Reduce Harmful Drinking. To increase awareness of the physiological effects of alcohol, gender differences, low risk strategies, and alternative choices. To increase the number of students receiving educa- tional programming. To increase the awareness of the Campus Obser- vation Room. To increase the number of non- alcohol related events. To reduce the negative consequences related to harmful drinking. To increase the adoption of healthy lifestyle practices among students. To decrease the number of students drinking at harmful or dangerous levels. Under the auspices of the University Council on Substance Abuse Prevention, the Queen’s University Initiative to Reduce Harmful Drinking is committed to fostering a campus environment that promotes the adoption of health enhancing attitudes and behaviours. The initiative recognizes that personal well-being enhances academic success and may set a pattern for life-long healthy living. A greater number of students endorsing and adopting low-risk drinking practices. A positive change to the drinking subculture within the campus community in general and the student population in particular. A greater number of collaboratively designed and developed health promotion and harm reduction programs and strategies to meet the needs of Queen’s University students. To increase the awareness of and the access to alcohol related resources and information. To increase the collaboration of both on and off campus resources in the Queen’s Initiative to Reduce Harmful Drinking. To increase the campus community’s awareness regarding the nature of the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of the student population regarding alcohol and alcohol related issues.
