P LAY - BASED LEARNING LEARNING THROUGH INQUIRY! The FDK classroom embeds opportunities for learning through play in the physical environment and play activities Children are offered choices based on developmental stages Activities are designed so that children: think creatively, explore and investigate, solve problems, engage in inquiry and share learning with others (The Full-Day Early-Learning Kindergarten Program 2010-11)

T HE KINDERGARTEN DAY 8:15 Classes begin 9:55-10:05 Break 10:05-10:25 Recess 12:05-12:25 Lunch 12:25-1:05 Recess 2:45 Dismissal

S NACKS AND LUNCHES Food allergies: We are a nut safe school! Nutritious Easy to open independently Child is able to eat independently Food that does not require heating Littlerless lunches (Eco School) Identifying snacks and lunch for child Prepare lunches and snacks the night before

W ASHROOM AND SELF - HELP ROUTINES At school, children: - use washroom independently - wash hands with soap - dress and undress Belts Overalls Zippers Buttons Coat, boots, hats, mittens, shoes

D RESSING FOR SUCCESS Washable clothing Velcro shoes Dress for activity Change of clothing: kept at school in a labelled bag ALL ITEMS LABELLED Indoor and outdoor shoes

S CHOOL SUPPLIES Backpack large enough to hold a lunch bag and a big library book Lunch/snack bag Indoor shoes

P REPARING FOR THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL - SEPTEMBER 8 TH, 2015 Over the summer: Walk to school and have a picnic Play in the school yard Find the outside entrance to the kindergarten rooms Establish bedtime routines and morning routines Make up a fun goodbye routine and practise it in other situations before school starts.

F IRST DAY OF SCHOOL Make the first day fun Get up in time to get everything done without rushing Be calm Talk about the fun things (s)he will be doing Take your child to school Make sure your child gets to school on time and is picked up on time The first day of school is a big event in the life of a family, make it a positive one!

F IRST D AY OF SCHOOL FOR JK’ S : All JK students will come to school on the first day from 8:15 a.m. until 11:15 a.m. Proceed to the back pavement area of the school where you will be directed to your child’s teacher Say your goodbyes! Children will enter the school with their new teacher and class mates at the morning bell Pick up will be at 11:15 a.m. You may enter the school at the office to sign your child out. The following day will be a regular full day from 8:15 a.m. until 2:45 p.m.

A DDITIONAL INFORMATION : Bus Information - See yellow information sheet in WTK bag - Click on the “School Bus Information” link on the York Region website www.yrdsb.cawww.yrdsb.ca - All Kindergarten students will be accompanied by a ‘bus buddy’ Communication bags Your child will receive a clear bag in September. It is to be used as a form of communication between teacher and parents. All items will be sent home in the bag. The bag is to be returned daily.

W ELCOME TO K INDERGARTEN BAGS Every bag will include the following items; o 4 Books o Magnetic letters and mat o Playdough (and recipe) o Welcome to Kindergarten CD o Blow up ball o Crayons, glue, scissors, coloured paper o Resource book for the family activities o Bus information
