2. Early Life Theodore Roosevelt Jr. was born October 27 th, 1858 in New York City to his Dutch father and Martha Roosevelt. He had an older sister, Anna, and two younger siblings: his brother elliot and his sister Corinne. He was homeschooled due to his severe asthma which became less severe the older he got. He entered Harvard at 18 and completed all 4 years. His father’s death in his second year of college made him work even harder to obtain his goals. After college, he studied in Germany and then entered politics. In 1884 he deserted his political work because his wife passed away while giving birth to a healthy girl. After remarrying in 1886 he continued his political work and returned to New York.

3. Early Life Cont. President Harrison appointed Roosevelt to the United States Civil Service Commission, where he served until 1895. 1895- Roosevelt and his fellow commissioners established new rules, created a bicycle squad to enforce New York's traffic laws, and standardized the use of pistols by officers. He also selected the.32 Caliber Colt as the first standard issue pistol for the NYPD. 1897- Roosevelt became the assistant secretary of the Navy. While in this office he went to Cuba and lead the “Rough Riders” to victory during the Cuban War. 1898-when he returned he was elected governor of New York. He would’ve ran another term but was chosen as Vice President for President Mckinley.

4. Presidency After re-elected in 1901 president McKinley was assassinated. This made Theodore Roosevelt our 26 th president, and the youngest in our nation’s history. Roosevelt won re-election in 1904 against democrat Alton B. Parker. 1905 -Teddy Roosevelt walked his niece, Eleanor Roosevelt, down the aisle during the wedding for Eleanor and her fifth cousin Franklin D. Roosevelt. Franklin Roosevelt became our 32 nd president 28 years later.

5. Presidency Cont. During his time as President, Roosevelt turned the United States towards world politics. He was aware of the need for a shortcut between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans as a means of connecting the world. So, in 1903, construction of the Panama Canal began. During his presidency, he added enormously to the forests in the West, reserved lands for public use, and created great irrigation projects. He won the Nobel Peace Prize for bringing an agreement about the Russo-Japanese War, reached a Gentleman's Agreement on immigration with Japan, and sent the Great White Fleet on a goodwill tour of the world.

6. Retirement When Roosevelt left office in 1909 he retired to Oyster Bay, NY. Even after promising he wouldn’t run for office again he did so in 1912. During this campaign he created the Progressive Party, also known as the Bull-Moose Party. While delivering a speech during the campaign, Roosevelt was shot in the chest in an assassination attempt by John Nepomuk Schrank. He then continued his speech for 90 minutes before seeing a doctor. He brushed off the attack saying, "It takes more than that to kill a bull moose.“ He then lost to Wildrow Wilson, which means he kept a bullet in his body for an hour and a half for nothing. Roosevelt was glad that all of his sons served during WWI, but sad when his youngest son was killed in Germany.

7. Retirement Cont. 1917 -President Wilson refused Roosevelt’s offer to raise and command a division to fight in World War I. Outside of his political career, Roosevelt published more than 25 books, including a biography and an autobiography. Theodore Roosevelt died in his sleep on January 6, 1919 at his estate in Sagamore Hill. He was 60 years old and was buried at the Youngs Memorial Cemetery in New York. Although he was denied the Congressional Medal of Honor for the Battle of San Juan Heights, Roosevelt received the Medal of Honor, the highest award for military service in the U.S, on January 16,2001. Roosevelt was the first president to receive the Medal of Honor.
