Prefixes Today we are going to use prefixes to determine the meaning of words. Determine= figure out What are going to do today? What are we going to determine?

Prefixes If you untie your shoe, are you making a bow or taking it out? If you rewrite your letter, are you writing it for the first time or second time? If it is impossible to swim to China, can you do it or not?

The way we knew exactly what was meant was by adding a prefix.

A prefix is a word part added to the beginning of a base word. Please keep in mind…the base word is a word by itself. Example pre-read. Read is a word by itself without the prefix “pre”. Pre + read=pre-read What is a prefix?

Importance Why is it important to know prefixes?

WARNING! Just because a word begins with im, re, or another prefix, doesn’t mean it is a prefix. Eating a good breakfast is important. The mailman received the mail. If there is no base word, then it’s not a prefix. Ceive or Portant don’t mean anything by themselves

Read the sentence. Think: “What is the sentence about?” Look at the prefix definition. Choose and write the best prefix for the sentence.
