Collier County Solid Waste Recycling Background Collier County generated 750,938 tons of municipal solid waste in FY 2009 Commercial waste accounts for 65% of the total waste stream Over 50% of business waste is recyclable cardboard and office paper Collier County’s mandatory commercial recycling ordinance adopted 2004. Public Utilities Division11 Selecting Business Segments Start with business that have received a recycling award. Focus on businesses with high turn over like hotels and restaurants. Focus on top ten businesses with largest employment. Manage rivalries at some businesses. Some gated communities were forced to sell golf courses.

Public Utilities Division12 Selecting companies Select companies with a story to tell. Site visit of the company. Get a back up filming date. Allow businesses to promote themselves. Some companies just too busy to be filmed.

Public Utilities Division13 Selecting individuals to film Some people very are conscious of their appearance and accents. One participant refused to allow their video to be included. Managers may be wooden. Ask managers to watch previous recycling videos to get an idea of what is expected.

Setting Clients at ease Vendor calls in advance and talk about the process and the project. This is not 60 Minutes show. If you don’t tell the story right the first time. We will re-film it. Develop a partnership with the client. Public Utilities Division14

Multiple Camera Advantages Instant replay from different angles. We have to show the bins and cut away to show the process. Saves client and vendor time with one filming rather than two or three. Public Utilities Division15

Filming techniques: transcripts Technical interviews were difficult for vendor to follow. Instead of screening the tape, vendor types the interview. They cut and paste and put videos in the best order. Public Utilities Division16

Can I recycle it at Home? Color photographs of glass and food waste on cardboard backing is safer. We practiced this presentation with school kids as a recycling competition. We targeted four minutes but the video segment was six minutes. We discussed many items. We left non recyclable items on the tables. Public Utilities Division36
