3 Conventions and stereotypes Genre Romance Science Fiction Characteristics Love, relationships, a happy ending, overcoming obstacles, Space, science, the unknown, unusual creatures

4 Chapter 11, p87 Read page 87 again. Make a note of words or phrases you find on this page which you can link to a genre. For example; ‘The day after was Sunday: a day of fear and shadows’. This quote uses the word ‘fear’ which is a characteristic of a genre. Make your own list and come to a conclusion about which genre/s are represented on this page. Extension: look further into the whole chapter. Are any other genres present? How do you know?

5 Chapter 12, p96 Read page 96 again. Joshua Raven uses a slightly different genre at this point in the novel. What is it, and how do you know? Compare this page with p87. What do you notice? What effect does this passage have on the reader?

6 Task Write a paragraph to answer the following question: ‘How does Joshua Raven use genre within the novel 5fingers, and what effect does this have on the reader?’
