History 1642: Dutch explorer Abel Tasman discovered mountains at the north-west coast of Tasmania – –named it Van Diemen’s Land after the governor of Dutch East Indies 17th and 18th century: many explorers (mostly British and French) made expeditions in Tasmania – –Including James Cook (1777) – –A lot of British and French names were given to pieces of land, rivers etc.

History 1854: two houses of Parliament were established 1856: the name of Van Diemen‘s Land was changed to Tasmania and Tasmania came under control of the British 1901: The Commonwealth of Australia was stated (Tasmania become part of Australia)

Sarah's Island Macquarie Harbour penal station -on the west coast of Tasmania -opened in 1822 -closed in 1833 -one of the harshest penal station of Australia -after the closing in 1833, most of the convicts were relocated to Port Arthur

State capital and biggest city of Tasmania, Hobart -founded in 1803 as a penal colony -located in the south east of Tasmania -around 205.000 inhabitants -about the sights: -university, theatres, casino, a beautiful botanical garden and different museums, like the museum of New and Old Art, established in January 2011
