1 A REVIEW OF THE 8 PARTS OF SPEECH Period 5 Grammar Unit #1, Lesson #1

2 WHAT ARE “PARTS OF SPEECH”? Every word in the English language can be classified into one of the following categories: 1.Noun 2.Pronoun 3.Verb 4.Adjective 5.Adverb 6.Preposition 7.Conjunction 8.Interjection

4 ONE WORD, MULTIPLE PARTS OF SPEECH… Some words in the English language can be more than one part of speech.  Ex: “grade” as a verb  The teacher graded the summer reading tests in red ink. “grade” as a noun  I earned a high grade on the summer reading test.

6 A QUICK REVIEW OF THE 8 PARTS OF SPEECH

7 VERB Definition: Expresses an action or a state of being Examples: 1.Naomi attended a bird’s funeral. 2.Zach Powers is a bully. 3.Cap was living at Garland. Three Types of Verbs: 1. Action 2. Linking 3. Helping (always used in a verb phrase)

8 NOUN Definition: A person, place, thing, or idea Examples: 1.Capricorn Anderson is a boy. 2.Hugh received many wedgies. Two types of nouns: 1. common 2. proper

9 PRONOUN Definition: Takes the place of a noun Examples: 1.He was elected 8 th grade class President. 2.We saw him doing tai chi on the lawn.

10 ADJECTIVE Definition: Modifies a noun or a pronoun Examples: 1.Cap has messy hair. 2.Sophie received a beautiful bracelet. One type of adjective: articles (a, an, the)

11 ADVERB Definition: Modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb Examples: 1.Rain clumsily fell off of a ladder. 2.Zach is very mean to his peers.

12 PREPOSITION Definition: Shows the relationship of a noun or pronoun to another word Examples: 1.Darryl knocked Cap to the ground. 2.Mrs. Donnelly used to live at Garland Farms.

13 CONJUNCTION Definition: Joins words or groups of words Examples: 1.Pizza and television were new to Capricorn. 2.Cap was bullied, but he did not seem to realize it. One type of conjunction: coordination conjunctions  Remember the coordinating conjunctions with this acronym: FANBOYS (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so)

14 INTERJECTION Definition: Expresses emotion and has no grammatical relation to the rest of the sentence Examples: 1.No, Garland Farms has been sold. 2.Wow! Cap is not dead!
