The First Americans Q. Who were the first people to occupy the area of the United States ? How did they first arrive ? A. The first people to occupy the U.S were native americans. They first arrived from migration .

European Exploration Q. What were some reasons for European Exploration that led them to the North American continent? Who were some of the explorers and in what areas did they land ? A. European Exploration led them to the North because Americans pushed westward across the continent, enticed by the lure of riches, open land and a desire to fufill the nation's manifest destiny. Cabrillo was the first European explorer of the Californian coast.

European Impact Q. What impact did the establishment of Colonies by Europe in North America have on the Native American people who had already lived there ? A. It created a war that was caused because of the land .

Colonization Q. What European countries established major colonies in the area of the United States ? When & where was the first English colony . A. England , France , Spain & The Netherlands established major colonies . The first English colony was in Jamestown , Virgina in

French & Indian War Q. Which countries fought in the French and Indian war ? What was the cause of this war ? During what years did it occur and which country won ? A. The French and Indian War was a war between the years of 1754 – The war was fought between the colonies of Great Britain and New France, with both sides supported by military troops from Europe.

The Path To Independence
Q. During the Mid-1700’s, the Colonists in America were beginning to become disgruntled by the British Government that ruled them. In 1776, these colonists would ask for independence. Find three reasons that the Colonists had for wanting their independence from the British Government. A. Mainly, the Americans wanted England to take away unfair taxes, repeal the unfair acts (Intolerable Acts, Stamp Act, Sugar Act etc.) and to be represented in the British Parliament, but since Great Britain refused to do so, they declared independence.

Founding Fathers Q. Name two people who played a major role in declaring and/or gaining independence for the United States. Briefly describe their role. A. Thomas Jefferson declared independence for the U.S by composing the Declaration of independence . Abraham Lincoln also helped with the Declaration of Independence.

The American Revolution
Q. Name one advantage that the British Army had over the Colonists and then name an advantage that the Colonists had over the British army during the American Revolution. During what years did the war occur? Also, name a major battle of the war. A. An advantage the British had over the Colonists were guidance from the Indians and gun powder. The colonists never had to worry about supplies unlike the British . The war happened from 1775 – The battle of Yorktown was a major battle of this war.

After Independence Q. After winning the Revolutionary War and our Independence, the United States developed the Articles of Confederation to govern our country. However, the United States quickly discarded the Articles of Confederation and wrote a new document that created our current system of government. Name that document that created our current government and name the three branches of government that it created. Also name the first leader of our country and tell why he was chosen as our first President. A. The U.S Constitution signed in 1787 created the government and three branches named Executive, Judical , and the Legislative. George Washington was the first president and he was chosen because he was the most famous and popular American at the time.

Growth of America Q. During Thomas Jefferson’s presidency, the size of the United States doubled. How did Jefferson manage to double the country’s size? Who did we acquire this land from and whom did Jefferson send to explore the new land? A. Jefferson doubles the country’s size with the Louisana Purchase . They acquired the land from France . Lewis , Clark and Sacagawea .

More Growth of America Q. By the Civil War the size of the country had grown greatly. What areas of land did the United States acquire from and from what countries did we acquire them ? A. Louisana Purchase from France. Florida from Spain. Texas , California , Nevada , Utah , Arizona & Some of New Mexico from Mexico.

The Civil War Q. What were some reasons that the Southern States had for wanting to split from the United States? What years did the Civil War occur and what was the result from its ending ? A. The South wanted to split because of Slavery & because they lost control of Congress . The Civil War was from , & the result from its ending was it abolished slavery as a legal institution in the United States.

After The Civil War Q. How did the newly free black population adapt to life in the United States after the Civil War? Were they treated fairly in American society? What kind of discrimination and hardships did the African-American population face during the period between 1870 and the 1960s? Give some examples that showed the discrimination and segregation. A. After the Civil War, African Americans adapted to life as free people with the help of Black church leaders as well as a federal organization known as the Freedmen's Bureau. The Bureau helped blacks establish schools, purchase land, and legalize their marriages, however, funding limitations and deeply held racist attitudes forced the Bureau to close in African Americans were largely abandoned to contend on their own with persistent racial attitudes and discrimination. Many continued to work for their former masters as sharecroppers or tenant farmers in a vicious cycle of debt peonage.

World War I Q. What started World War I in Europe? Did President Wilson feel that the USA should become involved in World War I when the war began? What made the United States enter in to the war? What countries did we fight against in World War I? A . The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife started WWI . President Wilson did not want to join World War I. They entered after Germany kept attacking the U.S . We fought Austria-Hungary , Germany & the Ottoman Empire.

Great Depression Q. Give a reason that the Great Depression that began in the 1920s started. What was the unemployment rate of this period? A. The Great Depression started with the crash of the stock market in the 1920’s. The unemployment rate was 7.2 % .

World War II Q. What prompted the United States to become involved in WWII? What countries were we fighting against in the War? What new invention of that time allowed us to end the War on the Japanese front quickly? What happened to Germany after World War II? A. After Japan bombed the Pearl Harbor they became involved in WWII . We fought Germany , Italy , Japan & France .Nuclear Bombs allowed us to end the war quickly. After the war , Germany split into four parts .

The Cold War Q . Describe what Communism is. The Cold War was a period of tension between the United States and the USSR, which was a communist country. During that period, the United States wanted to prevent the USSR from spreading communism to other countries. Aside from the USSR, name 3 other countries that had communist governments between 1950 and Name two wars or conflicts that the USA fought in to try to prevent the spread of Communism. A. Communism is an political theory. Hungary , China & Australia had communist governments. The Korean War & The Vietnam War USA both fought.

Vietnam War Q. The Vietnam War was fought to prevent the spread of communism. Although our troops fought bravely during this war, the USA could come home with a victory. Find 2 reasons that made the war in Vietnam difficult for the USA to be victorious . A. The US had to fight without nuclear weapons & not angering the communist superpowers.

Q. Briefly describe what happened in the United States on September 11th, What group of people was responsible for those attacks? What role does the geography of Afghanistan make it difficult in our search for Osama bin Laden and the Taliban? A. Al Quada is responsible for the 9/11 attacks. It was difficult to find Osama bin Laden because Aghanistan is fulled with mountains .

The War in Iraq Q. Who was the brutal dictator that the United States removed as leader of Iraq? What brutal actions did that dictator take against his own country’s people during his reign? A. Saddam Hussien was the brutal dictator that the U.S removed as leader of Iraq . He went to war against his own people .

Presidency of Obama Q. Who is Barack Obama ? When did he become president ? Include a biography of Obama and his political goals. A. Barack Hussein Obama II is the 44th president of the U.S . He became president on January 20, Some of his political goals are for better education , health care , & cleaner environments .
