1 What have the lands of British community contributed to the culture of Europe?

2 Ireland belongs to the archipe- lago of the British Isles. Its area is 84 406 km². The waters of Atlantic Ocean are surroun- ding Ireland in the North and West. In the East and the South- East, Ireland is separated from Great Britain by an Irish Sea, Saint George's Channel and the North Channel. The location of Ireland

3 Administration 3,9 milion people live in Ireland. The main cities are Cork, Galway, Limerick and Dublin (a capital). Ireland is divided into 4 provinces and 32 shires.

5 History The first traces of settlement in Ireland come from 80th century BC. The first people on the island were hunters from Europe. They bequeathed neolithic tombs like Newgrange. In the 5th century the island was converted to Christianity by St. Patrick. On 1 January 1801, Ireland and England combined together creating the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.

6 Newgrange One of the biggest tombs made by human. Every year during the winter solstice, tourists visit this monument very numerously, wanting to see a spectacular craft of the ancient civilization.

7 Irish mythology Irish mythology contains Mythological cycle, Ulster cycle, Fenian cycle and Historical cycle. In the first of them one of the most important references is Lebor Gabála Érenn. It ‘s a alias-history of deraving provenance Irish from Noah.

8 Leprechaun He comes from Irish Mythology. He is an Irish goblin. Leprechaun is 93 cm high. Mythology proclaims that goblin is carrying two pouches. One contains a silver coin, and the second contains a gold coin. The gold coin always changes in ash or dry leaves if somebody takes it.

9 Banshee She comes from Irish Mythology, too. She foretells death. Banshee also brings nightmares, sitting on teir chest, while people are sleeping. She is an intercessor between the land of the spirit world and the land of people.

11 Church of Ireland Province of Anglican Church. It works in Ireland and North Ireland. Till the 1st January 1871, Church of Ireland was the official church in the country. Then the church was disconnected from the country.

12 Flag of Ireland - Irish Tricolour People supposed that green colour meant Catholics, orange colour meant Protestants and white colour meant a peace between both of them, the other interpretation qualifies orange as a allegiance, green symbolizes republic and white means peace.

13 Saint Patrick – Patron of Ireland Saint Patrick was the bishop and apostle of Ireland, missionary, organizer of religious life in Ireland. When he was 16 years old, he was captured and sold into slavery. His symbol is a green clover.

14 Saint Patrick's Day In Ireland this day is free from work. Every year on 17th March people wear green clothes and organize festivals and street parades. This festival is also celebrated in Poland but it isn’t as cheerful as in Ireland.

15 Monuments Adare castle Perfect example of the medieval castle with the fortification. It was a very important defensive point of count’s tribe Desmond.

16 Monuments Altamonts Gardens Known as the most romantic garden in Ireland. Altamont is an enchanting blend of formal and unformal gardens located on a 100 acre estete. It is often referred to as 'the jewel in Ireland's gardening crown'.

17 Monuments Ardfert cathedral Built on the site of a monastery founded in the 6th century by St. Brendan the Navigator. The cathedral is located in the village of Ardfert, County Kerry.

18 Monuments Athenry Castle This castle dates from the 13th century. It is in the three-storey manner.

19 Monuments Aughnanure Castle The castle was built by the O'Flahertys in the 16th century. Aughnanure is one of over 200 tower houses in County Galway, constructed mainly by Gaelic and Anglo-Norman land owning families. The tower lies close to the shores of Lough Corrib, and translates to "the field of the yews" in Irish.

20 Sports Two characteristic sports; hurling and gaelic footbol come from Ireland. Hurling is a variant of hokey on the grass and also the oldest team game. Gaelic football is an intersection of rugby, basketball, football and volleyball.

21 Irish clothes The traditional Irish dress containts five elements. These clothes are characterizing intensity and the big contrast of colours.

22 Irish stepdance Everyone knows the lively national dance of Irishmen. But not everyone knows why it is being danced without the participation of hands. Hands in the dance are left along the body and it symbolizes a division of the island. Supposedly Irishmen will raise hands only when Ireland is united.

23 Writers Irish poet Yeats William Butler has written words which perfectly are giving the spirit of this country back: „Not important whom you are supposed to be. Lean to the bottom, when you want drinks. Sing, dance, go ahead, discover Ireland in yourself. " Yeats William Butler

25 Irish Painters George William Russell He was not only painter but also poet, writer, mystic, philosopher and journalist, founder of the Irish theosophical movement. His painting Bathers is the most famous of all his paintings.

26 Music Next to the traditional music, Ireland is famous for the rock stage. U2 The most famous rock band coming from Ireland. U2 is known on all over the world

27 Known directors Irishmen are connected not only with literature, but also other fields of art He was famous for both his Westerns such as Stagecoach, The Searchers, and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, and adaptations of such classic 20th- century American novels as The Grapes of Wrath.
