2. What is Graphic Art? Suppose you want to announce or sell something, amuse or persuade someone, explain a complicated system or demonstrate a process. In other words, you have a message you want to communicate. How do you “send” it? If you use any visual medium at all-if you make a poster; type a letter; create a business logo, a magazine ad, or an album cover; even make a computer printout-you are using a form of visual communication called graphic design.

3. What is Graphic Art? Graphic design is a creative process that combines art and technology to communicate ideas. The designer works with a variety of communication tools in order to convey a message from a client to a particular audience. The main tools are image (illustration) and typography (lettering).

4. What is Graphic Art? If graphic art and design is done well, the product looks good, communication is successful and the audience gets the message. If done badly, communication fails and the message is lost. Graphic art and design used to be known as commercial art. It was the art of designing good-looking brochures, magazines, books, ads, newspapers, labels and everything that was to be printed. Today, graphic art and design is still commercial art, but includes a lot more.

Layout  Graphic designers like to sketch a plan of how the job will look when it is finished.  This play is called a layout.  The layout shows how everything is positioned on the page: the heading, the writing, pictures, borders, and so on.  If there are any problems, the layout has to be redone to fix the problems.  Always sketch at least one layout before you start. It will help your final design to see different choices.
