5. Background of Standards of Nursing Practice First Standards of Nursing Practice published in 1973 Updated as deemed necessary by the ANA Board Members Most recent revision was in 2010, previous edition stood for six years (ANA, 2010, p.88)

Assessment Nurses assess patient by gathering subjective and objective information Focus and priority are determined by the patient's immediate needs Assessments are record in the patient's medical records, either written or electronic Assessment is an ongoing process as patient care is continued (Potter & Perry, 2009)

8. Diagnosis Nurses review the assessment data to diagnose patient issues Nursing diagnosis relates to a person's response to health problems and not the actual disease (Potter & Perry, 2009)

9. Outcome Identification Outcomes represent patient's respones to nursing interventions Outcomes are goals that are measurable Tailored to each patient's needs and capabilities (Potter & Perry, 2009)

11. Implement Putting the care into effect that was designed in the planning phase. Constantly reassessing, supervising and delegating tasks to be done. Rearranging goals and outcomes as needed to have the best results for the patient.

13. Jeremy TenBrink The ANA plays a great deal in my the care I provide on a daily basis as a circulating nurse. The care that I give are based from these standards. I assess my patient before going into the OR and anticipate what the best outcomes will be. Finally after the procedure I evaluate the care plan, and provide documentation that all goals have been achieved before discharging them from the OR.

14. Kristine Cargill In my current practice as a medical-surgical nurse, ANA practice standards influence my nursing practice by guiding how I care for my patients. Assessment is an ongoing process as I care for patients. When I assess patients and evaluate the patient outcomes, the outcomes may be adjusted to meet the patient's needs and goals as they change. Planning the care for my patients involves being organized and being ready to reorganize care if changes occur.

15. Bailey Sundberg I use these standards non-stop at work, it has become a subconcious habit. When I am not doing a physical assessment of a patient I am still listening and observing everything around me. I make nursing diagnoses constantly and adjust my care and the care plans accordingly, even if as simple as putting those "horse pills" in pudding next time. I help to identify the outcomes that need to be achieved for the next phase of rehabilation, with the majority of implementation aside from medical care being education and encouragement. As I am part of an interdisciplinary team, my area of expertise is the evaluation that medical needs/goals have been met. When a patient is eligible for discharge essentially this practice procedure starts all over again starting with assessing the needs of the patient after discharge and so on. I work on a post-acute orthopedic rehabilitation unit.
