Isaac Levitan Levitan was born in Kibarta, near Verzhbolovo Station, in Suvalki province (today Kibartay, Lithuania) on August 30, 1860 and died in Moscow on August 4, 1900. He is considered perhaps the greatest landscape painter of Russia.

He was born in a poor Jewish family, but was able to study at the famous Moscow School of Painting and Architecture where his talent for landscape painting became evident. He was taught by Vasilii Perov, Aleksei Savrasov and Vasilii Polenov. By 1879 the painter developed his own style and his pictures were enthusiastically received at exhibitions. About 1883 Levitan became acquainted with the writer Anton Chekhov, this relationship would turn into a life-long friendship. In the Crimea and the Volga region he managed to capture the poetry and emotion of the landscape in an unprecedented manner. Then he discovered the world of the Parisian Impressionists and a good example of its influence is in one of his last paintings, The Lake: Russia (1899-1900), in which the free and dynamic brushstrokes and the brightness of colors are similar to the work of Vincent Van Gogh.

The Painting “March” The picture "March" opens itself a new stage in Levitan's creativity. The plot of a picture "March" is extremely simple, and the image is simple. Road in front, on the right - a corner of the wooden house and a horse in sledge before a porch, snowdrifts of a thawing snow and trees of manor - that's all, that is represented in this wonderful, full poetry of a waking up nature to a picture. Its internal theme, its essential maintenance is this experience of joyful and exciting awakening of the nature.

Sunny day. Spring The picture “Sunny day. Spring” (1877) - one of Levitan's first works. On it the cosy rural corner where under trees, near to a log hut and busy dig in the covered newborn grass to the ground of a hen is represented. Excitedly, with love it tries to transfer all to a detail, to write out them more carefully. Certainly, it carefully entered a lot of primitive and naive: in how logs and boards of small houses "are listed" all, trunks and foliage of birches, shadows from them on a wall of a shed, even burdocks about it leave. But for us this story that the artist sees is lovely and touching, how the spring sun.
