4 What is Feminism? Feminist theory is one of the major sociological theories, which analyses the status of women and men in society. They do this with the aim of bettering women's lives. Feminist theory focuses on giving a voice to women and highlighting how women have contributed to society. There are four main types of feminist theory that attempt to explain the societal differences between men and women:

5 The FOUR different types of feminists attempt to explain women’s subordination in society . They have different perspectives , ask different questions and come to different conclusions: e.g. VICTORIA, SARA, SHARNTELLE AND ELINOR WILL EACH EXPLAIN ONE TYPE OF FEMINISM TO THE CLASS. THE REST OF YOU MUST MAKE NOTES ON WHAT THEY HAVE SAID, AS THEY WILL BE TESTING YOU TO SEE WHAT YOU LEARNED!

6 Liberal Feminists want very gradual change in society
Liberal Feminists want very gradual change in society. Liberal Feminists see that because of CULTURE and ATTITUDES of society, women do not always get the chance to excel in the workplace. If they want to stay and be successful at work they must sacrifice time with their children. It is because we are SOCIALISED in to different gender roles from birth that this discrimination exists. WHAT DO WE REMEMBER ABOUT GENDER ROLE SOCIALISATION? SEX DISCRIMINATION ACT (1975) & THE EQUAL PAY ACT (1975) were heavily supported by Liberal Feminists. Liberal Feminists try to get rid of sexism and stereotypical views of females in children’s books and the mass media.

7 Radical Feminists are radical in every way, shape, form and view
Radical Feminists are radical in every way, shape, form and view. They believe that society and the way in which we are SOCIALISED, is very negative. Generally men are the enemy What types of beliefs do you think they have? What types of things might they do?

8 Marxist Feminists believe that it is not men that oppress women it is the capitalist system.
Women must remain subservient to men. (This basically means women must remain in an inferior position to men). According to Marxist Feminists: women ‘see to the needs’ of the men in their lives and refresh them in order that they can go back to work the next day, renewed and invigorated. Even domestic violence is the fault of the capitalist system. The poor working class men need someone to vent their frustrations on… What are your thoughts on this

9 Postmodern Feminism: This was set as homework last lesson- 2 of you will feedback what you found. Try and make links to social class. E.g. Marxism Feminists and capitalism
