2 History of AVID AVID began in the 1980’s by Mary Catherine Swanson, an English teacher from Clairemont High School. She developed the program to meet the needs of her student population. 3 About AVID AVID is an elective class here at SEMS beginning in 7 th grade and students continue on to high school. The AVID program is designed to help students to be more successful in school and prepare them for college by developing the necessary skills and work habits. 4 AVID during the Week Students participate in AVID curriculum on Monday’s and Wednesday’s. 5 AVID Tutorials AVID tutorials take place on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s AVID tutorials take place on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s Tutorials encourage higher level thinking skills and cooperation Tutorials encourage higher level thinking skills and cooperation College tutors, peers and teacher assist the students in understanding the content of the students’ core classes. 8 AVID results As the number of years in AVID increases, the "a-g" completion rate increases. In fact, 9 out of 10 students that are in AVID for 5 or 6 years complete the "a-g" requirements.
