The UN is an international, non-governmental organization of 193 countries. Countries part of the UN are called Member States. Membership “is open to all peace-loving States that accept the obligations contained in the United Nations Charter and, in the judgment of the Organization, are able to carry out these obligations”. The Charter of the United Nations was signed on 26 June, 1945 in San Francisco, California by 50 countries. The UN officially came into existence on October 24, 1945 when the charter was ratified. Before the UN, there was the League of Nations, created in 1919 as a part of the Treaty of Versailles. The League of Nations ended when it failed to prevent the Second World War. The UN was created after World War II to maintain international peace and security. The United Nations

The UN has 4 main purposes: 1.To keep peace throughout the world 2.To develop friendly relations among nations 3.To help nations work together to improve the lives of poor people, to conquer hunger, disease and illiteracy, and to encourage respect for each other’s rights and freedoms 4.To be a centre for harmonizing the actions of nations to achieve these goals The United Nations
