Types of plastics Polyethene Polystyrene PVC
3
Plastics are made from crude oil Crude oil is unrefined oil – it needs to be purified before it can be used.
5
Crude oil is made of hydrocarbons which can be separated into fractions of different boiling points
7
Simple hydrocarbons are separated from oil. These are called monomers These monomers join together to form POLYMERS All plastics are made of polymers
8
Everyday applications of plastics Electrical insulation Food containers Packaging Pipes

10
What property does this plastic have that makes it suitable for its job?
11
Non-biodegradable plastics Non-biodegradable plastics do not break down in nature
12
Non bio degradable

Biodegradable plastics

Impact on the environment 1.Small pieces of plastic can get eaten by animals and birds on land and by fish in the sea which causes choking. 2.In the sea many fish can get trapped in plastic bags. 3.Plastic gives out an enormous amount of poisonous smoke when burnt which can be fatal in a house fire.
