4 The History of Lacrosse The sport of lacrosse is often described as the fastest sport on two feet and the first American sport but, it also could be described as the worst known sport or least understood sport in America (Rivers). To me lacrosse is a way of life I suppose, it makes up a great deal of my schedule and everyday life. From January to May I play on the Cox Lacrosse Club Team five to seven days a week. In the “Off Season” I often attend camps and partake in other activates to improve my skills and because I enjoy play lacrosse with my friends and family. I also follow college lacrosse on TV with my Dad and Grandfather. Many of my family members play or have played lacrosse, two of my cousins even played on a college team. My Dad start everyone in my family on lacrosse. He played on his high school team, he liked the sport so much that he pass it on to my sisters, my cousins and I. he play in 1980 though 1984 when the sport was much different and the player mentality was also very different. Even farther back in lacrosse history, the sport began in the early 1400s with Iroquois, Huron, Algonquin and other the Native American tribes (Sports Know How 1). In the first years of the sport the Native Americans called lacrosse “baggataway” and was related to religious rituals and was part of military training. The player had to be very athletic just for the amount of running that was required to make it up and down the field to the goals that could be anywhere from 500 meters to half a mile long. There were no sidelines that restricted play between the goals and games could last two to three days with breaks between sunset and sunrise. The amount of players on the field were around one thousand at a time. Players used three to four foot long wooden sticks with small nets made from leather. The ball that was used was made deerskin (Sports Know How 1).

5 Around the year 1840, the sport was introduced to the French settlers in Canada. They rename the sport “la crosse” witch was French for ball and stick. The Montreal Lacrosse Club was founded in 1856 were the first written set of rules were produced. These rules made standardized the field length to 880 meter long and also changed amount of players on the field from hundreds to only ten witch is a rule that still stands today. a Canadian dentist named George Beers I considered to be one of the fathers of modern lacrosse. He designed the rules to a set that were accepted by the National Lacrosse Association of Canada in 1867. Lacrosse was named the national sport of Canada. From Canada lacrosse then spread to the United States, England, Ireland, Scotland and Australia (Sports Know How 1). Lacrosse has

6 I interviewed my Dad because he played lacrosse at a time where the sport was much different than it is now. 1. Where was lacrosse popular when you play and how was the sport growing at the time? 2. How was the gear different that the type of gear we have today and the type of gear that the Canadians and Native Americans used in the past? 3. How did other sports teams (football, soccer, etc.) view lacrosse at the time? 4. How where you, your team and other teams viewed by the committee with regards to the violent nature of the sport? 5. How have the rule change or not changed from when you play until now?

7 I enjoyed doing this project for many reason. I found it to be enjoyable because we were able to research something that we liked and that we take interest in. I learn more about the sport of lacrosse by doing this project and it made me appreciate it more.
