Hot Coffee in the Morning (Without Waking her up!) NE EXPLORATIONS PSGBOA 2014
2
Share what has worked for NWE Ten years of flotillas to Alaska This year Five boats to Prince William Sound >100,000 miles of West Coast of Vancouver Island and Alaska travel >250,000 cumulative miles traveled >30,000 cruising hours
3
MORE THAN ONE WAY Many very knowledgeable owners in attendance Welcome your input We have clients who may spend two weeks on a boat Systems ◦Simple ◦Reliable ◦Easy to use ◦Consistent between boats
4
Inverters What are they? ◦Convert battery power to 110 volt outlet power ◦Can use house hold appliances when: ◦Not plugged into shore power ◦Generator not running ◦Battery Charger ◦Often best charger on the boat ◦Usually can charge 120 AMPS in bulk charge mode ◦Average about 100 AMPS per hour in charge mode
5
Some Common Uses Power Toaster Microwave Ice Maker Television & DVD player Lights Blender Mixer Hair dryer Coffee Maker
6
Common OEM Installation Normal factory installation of alternators ◦70 – 100 AMPS ◦One engine charges start bank ◦One engine charges house bank ◦Cruise at 8 kts ◦Given engine RPM most alternators at cruise output about 50 AMPS ◦25-35 AMPS to run boat ◦15-25 AMPS left to charge batteries
7
House Battery Bank Four 200 AMP batteries = 400 AMPS ◦At 12 volts, 50% discharged – fully charged at 112.6 volts ◦Need to put 200 AMPS back in batteries
8
Stuff to be aware of Batteries connected to inverter ◦12 volt battery fully charged at 12.6 volts ◦50% discharged at 12.0 volts ◦Bad stuff happens when you go below 12.0 volts ◦Cables can get hot ◦Switches can burn out ◦Battery life shorten ◦Lower voltages can ruin battery
9
How long does it take to charge my Batteries? With alternators while cruising – 20 AMPS /hour = 10 hours. With Generator – two hours When remote panel on inverter says “float Charge”
10
Typical morning/evening on Deception

Some thoughts on what has worked for NWE Inverters ◦Magnum Disconnect Switch ◦Blue Seas Heavy Duty – biggest you can fit Center Fielder ◦Blue Seas Batteries ◦AGM North Star, XXXX, “half” 200 AMP batteries ◦Lead Acid, Golf Cart System Monitor ◦Blue Seas Balmar Regulators Alternators ◦125 AMPS – 225 AMPS
