2. MMR EMS Education Two kinds of EMS education are initial and continuing education: 1. Initial education. 2. Continuous education.

3. MMR Initial education Definition : Initial education is the original training course for prehospital providers. Most states base paramedic education programs on the National EMS Education Standards.

4. MMR Domains and objective of initial education  divided into 3 specific learning domains: 1. Cognitive. 2. Affective. 3. Psychomotor.  Objective : is to develop competence necessary for safe entry-level paramedics to serve health care needs of population

5. MMR National EMS Education Standards. National EMS education standard : define the competencies, clinical behaviors, and judgments that must be met by entry-level EMS personnel to meet practice guidelines defined in the National EMS Scope of Practice Model."

6. MMR  Led by National Association of EMS Educators.  Replace NHTSA’s national standard curricula.  Goal of national EMS education standard is : for all paramedics to meet practice guidelines.

7. MMR The National EMS Scope of Practice Model Also known as ( Scope of Practice), published in 2007 and it included the following 1. Defined four levels of EMS personnel. 2. Defined practices, minimum skills required for each level. 3. Recommended that each level assumes mastery of previous level. 4. Recommended that the paramedic must demonstrate each skill within scope of practice for all patients

8. MMR Four levels of EMS personnel identified by scope of practice are : 1. First Responder 2. Emergency Medical Technician-Basic 3. Emergency Medical Technician-Intermediate 4. Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic

9. MMR National EMS Core Content  National EMS Core Content published in 2005  Defined entire domain of out ‐ of ‐ hospital practice  Identified universal body of knowledge, skills for EMS personnel  Led by National Association of EMS Physicians and American College of Emergency Physicians

11. Once the initial education is completed, the paramedic will become either certified or licensed.

12. MMR Continuous education  Continuing education programs include refresher courses for recertification and periodic in-service training sessions.  Most states require paramedics show proof of hours spent in continuing education or refresher programs.

13. MMR Importance of continuous education 1. Keeps you up to date on new research findings and new techniques and skills. 2. Helps prevent degradation of skills used less frequently. 3. To know the current issues in your state that affect you and your system’s ability to provide quality emergency medical care.

14. MMR Forms of continuous education 1. Conferences, seminars, lectures and workshops 2. Quality ‐ improvement reviews 3. Skill laboratories 4. Certification and recertification programs 5. Refresher training programs 6. Journal studies 7. Multimedia presentations and internet based study

15. MMR National Registry of EMTs (NREMT) 1. Prepares and administers standardized tests for the First Responder, EMT-Basic, EMT- Intermediate, and EMT-Paramedic. 2. Establishes the qualifications for registration and re- registration, and for establishing a minimal standard of competency.

16. MMR Public Education An essential and often overlooked component of EMS is the public. EMS systems should develop plans to educate the public on : 1. Recognizing an emergency. 2. Accessing the system. 3. Initiating BLS procedures.
