9 A BRIEF HISTORICAL INTRODUCTI ON TO NEW ZEALAND!

10 WAHINE DISASTER The sinking of the Lyttelton–Wellington ferry Wahine on 10 April 1968 was New Zealand’s worst modern maritime disaster. 51 people died on that day and another 2 died later in hospital. The ferry was overcome by the worst storm ever recorded in New Zealand. There was no rescue possible straight away as the seas were too rough. The ship had been hit by an old cyclone that carried 100 knot winds. Only four life boats made a successful journey to shore. The ship had run aground on the Barrett reef and lost all steering and power.

11 THE TREATY OF WAITANGI The treaty of Waitangi is a treaty that lets Pakeha buy Maori land and in return the British will not attack Maori people. Hone Heke was the first one to sign the Treaty.
