Clauses and Phrases A clause is a group of words that contains both a subject and a verb that complement each other. A phrase is a group of words that does not contain a subject or a verb that complement each other.

A related group of words with a subject and predicate is called a clause. A clause that makes sense by itself is an independent clause. A clause that does not make sense by itself is a dependent/subordinate clause. A complex sentence contains an independent and dependent clause.
