1
How is the average temperature of Earth determined? Jot down a few ideas Sketch a map of the room. Show the locations of each water container. When directed, place the thermometer in the water. Measure and record the water temperature. Share temperature data for each container with the whole group.
2
How is the average temperature of Earth determined? Make a table of temperature data, or write the temperature data on your map. Determine the average for all the temperature data. Consider the container you measured, or any other single container in the room. How well does its temperature reflect the mean temperature of all containers?
3
How is the average temperature of Earth determined? Read the short article and watch the video – “Taking the Earth’s Temperature” – Taking Earth’s Temperature Be prepared to share key points
4
Taking Earth’s Temperature
7
What is the pattern of Earth’s average temperature over the past 100 years? In your notebook write the phrase: “What I see,” on the left of the page. Record what you see and identify the year or span your are describing. – Think about changes, trends, and differences – No “because” statements Examine the NASA/GISS Scientists and British Scientists data
8
What is the pattern of Earth’s average temperature over the past 100 years? Write the phrase: “What it means” to the right of the first phrase. Record what it means and draw arrows pointing to what you are describing – You should have one WIM statement for each WIS statement Examine the NASA/GISS Scientists and British Scientists data?
9
DATA COMPARISON Why do you think it is important to compare data from two organizations? What is happening to the average temperature of Earth over time?
10
What factors affect Earth’s temperature? Do a quick write and answer this question. Share your ideas with your table group. Do the factors you identified affect the stability of Earth’s climate suddenly or accumulate over time gradually? What additional information might we need to address this question more in-depth?
11
What are the components of Earth’s climate system? http://www.skepticalscience.com/earths-climate-system.html

http://know.climateofconcern.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=article&id=118 What are natural influences on Earth’s climate system? Human influences?

Climate Influences Open your browser to Carbon Connections: The Carbon Cycle and the Science of Climate – http://carbonconnections.bscs.org/curriculum/uni t-03/index.php http://carbonconnections.bscs.org/curriculum/uni t-03/index.php – Unit 3 – Activity 3.2 Testing Forcings – Follow the directions to complete the activity
14
What are the impacts of natural influences on Earth’s mean surface temperature? Natural influences to investigate – Testing Forcing – Complete and answer any questions for each natural influence. El Niño/La Niña Cycle Volcanic Eruptions/Aerosols Solar Cycles
15
What are the impacts of human influences on Earth’s mean surface temperature? Human influences to investigate – complete as written – Human Factors – all groups investigate
16
What are some human activities that have cause a rise in global temperature? You will be assigned a human factor that may influence the increase in global temperatures. Work with your table group to complete the task. Include the following: – Your Human Impact and how humans cause it. – Explain how it may contribute to a rise in global temperature. (Use statistics and evidence to support) – Possible outcome if we continue doing the activity. (have stats and evidence to support) – Alternatives/solutions to reduce the effects of the HA. (this includes things we can do.)
17
What are some human activities that have cause a rise in global temperature? 1.burning of fossil fuels for energy such as coal, natural gas, and oil. 2.burning of fossil fuels for transportation, such as diesel fuel and gasoline. 3.cement production 4.agricultural activity 5.Landfills producing methane gas 6.deforestation 7.production of chlorofluorocarbons
18
Gallery Walk Read what others have written Provide at least one piece of feedback or advice – I wonder… – I noticed… – Pose a question Gather ideas from others (take notes of important information).
19
Human activities are continuing to affect the Earth’s energy budget by changing the emissions and resulting atmospheric concentrations of radiative important gases and aerosols and by changing land surface properties. Previous assessments have already shown through multiple lines of evidence that the climate is changing across our planet, largely as a result of human activities. The most compelling evidence of climate change derives from observations of the atmosphere, land, oceans and cryosphere. Unequivocal evidence from in situ observations and ice core records shows that the atmospheric concentrations of important greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O) have increased over the last few centuries. – IPCC Report, 2013
