D EFINE A MAGNET Do you know that a magnet has two poles? - North pole and South pole. What is a pole? - The end of the magnet.

D EFINE A MAGNET A magnet is a solid which attracts magnetic materials or objects and points north-south direction when suspended. A magnet is a material that produces a magnetic field. A magnet is a piece of material that attracts metal.

PROPERTIES OF A MAGNET A magnet exerts a magnetic force. When a bar magnet is freely suspended, the bar magnet points to north-south direction.

PROPERTIES OF A MAGNET Attractive property A magnet attracts magnetic substances like iron, steel, nickel and cobalt. Directive property A freely suspended magnets always point to the north-south direction. Poles exist in pairs A magnet contains two poles i.e. North pole and South pole Magnetic property is maximum at its poles.
