2. Curriculum and Instruction Student Access Opportunities for arts experiences are provided in the four areas of visual art, music, dance, and drama. Students create with a variety of media in art class.

Teachers incorporate creating, performing, and responding to the arts and provide exemplary models and guests to enhance student learning.

Students are actively engaged in creating, performing and responding and are encouraged to participate in juried events, exhibitions, contests and performances. Students created 3-D artwork to celebrate holidays and seasons.

20. Formative and Summative Assessment Expectations for Student Learning 5 th grade students performed the Virginia Reel after seeing the dance modeled. Teachers use exemplary models and clearly defined rubrics in guiding students toward demonstration of rigorous growth. A clearly defined rubric and model were used in guiding students toward composing, notating, and performing original music.

Formative and Summative Assessment Assessment for Teaching Teachers provide meaningful feedback on student performances and products and students reflect on the work of others and themselves for the purpose of artistic growth. Teachers provide feedback on student work. Here the art teacher commented on a student’s reflection of arts field trip.

22. Professional Development Opportunity/Participation Music teacher attended session on incorporating choir chimes in music class at KMEA conference. With help from a PTO fundraiser they were purchased and played by students. Professional learning opportunities lead to student learning.

23. Administrative / Leadership Support and Monitoring Policies and Monitoring Policies ensure discipline based arts instruction is a part of the school curriculum. 5 th graders dressed in character for career day. 2 nd graders attended the production of “Alice in Wonderland”

24. Administrative / Leadership Support and Monitoring Principal Leadership The principal supports arts programs and communicates with parents and community about upcoming arts events. Principal informs parents about arts events as evidenced by large percent of student participation in school-wide events.
