2 A brief assessment of:  News  Formal Education  Informal Education  Online Outreach  Origins Forum  Crossing the boundary between science and general culture  The Hubble achievement Impact of STScI Outreach on the Public

3 PUBLICIZING HUBBLE SCIENCE VIA THE MEDIA News The output of our News group drives much of the product development for the rest of OPO. News of Hubble’s discoveries reach large audiences annually via the News Office’s press releases, press conferences, podcasts and vodcasts, twitter, supplementary materials and videos, as well as through online dissemination.

6 http://amazing-space.stsci.edu Formal Education Amazing Space is designed to bring the universe into the K-14 classroom and engage teachers and students in the adventure of scientific discovery. Evaluation is used to determine if established program goals and outcomes are being met. Online and hard-copy materials are:  Used in all 50 states.  Used in 42 of the 100 largest school districts in the country.  Reach an estimated 6.3 million students per year.  Reach an estimated 506,000 pre- and in-service teachers.

7 A national sample of Amazing Space users provides data on selection criteria and use of materials in a variety of settings. Formal Education High speed internet in 2008, 55% compared to 47% in 2007. Study included YouTube, blogs, social networking, Second Life, and podcasting. Results will be used for future product and program development. Colleges and colleges of education using Amazing Space (207) School districts using Amazing Space (345) K-12 schools using Amazing Space (365) Training materials distribution (401) Informal Science Education venues (104) Telescopes from the Ground Up Study of Technologies as Outreach Tools for 18-24 year olds

8 Informal Science Education The Informal Education Program has partnered directly with 262 informal education venues in 255 cities in 46 states across the nation.

9 ViewSpace Multimedia Exhibit Program from STScI currently exhibited in 210 museums, science centers, planetariums. Informal Science Education Continually updated content from Hubble, JWST, Spitzer, Chandra, SOHO, Mars Exploration Rovers, New Horizons, Cassini-Huygens, Phoenix Mars Mission, THEMIS, Deep Impact, STEREO, and also in collaboration with SETI Institute, U. of California, U. of Texas. New program features, such as “Explore More” visitor follow-up, are informed by NASA Office of Education criteria. Exhibit at The Walters Art Museum

13 Online Outreach On average, the Office of Public Outreach’s web presence has approximately 2.2 million web sessions, 200 million hits per month. The website is a Winner of the 2007 International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences “Webby” and People’s Voice awards, and 2008 Official Honoree.

14 The “You Decide” IYA Activity  139,942 voted  7,293 K-12 students  10,519 college students  2,369 K-12 educators  2,152 college educators  104 K-12 educators signed up for a follow- up educational activity with their classes

15 Origins Forum International Year of Astronomy We are coordinating SMD planning for the International Year of Astronomy in 2009. The effort involves professional development for educators, public observing experiences, and community- based partnerships. Braillle Books A new book brings Great Observatories images to the fingertips of the blind. "Touch the Invisible Sky" is a 60-page book with color images of nebulae, stars, galaxies and some of the telescopes that captured the original pictures. Braille and large-print descriptions accompany each of the book's 28 photographs, making the book's design accessible to readers of all visual abilities.

16 Origins Forum Helps Astrophysics mission E/PO programs communicate and collaborate to make the best use of their resources. In collaboration with the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, coordinates E/PO activities involving 30 professionals representing 16 institutions and 24 Astrophysics Division missions and research programs. Educational Posters Coordination across NASA missions E/PO

17 Crossing the Boundary Between Science and General Culture Einstein was chosen person of the century because his theories crossed the boundaries of science into modern culture. HST showed us Einstein’s Universe!
