FACTORING USING THE DISTRIBUTIVE PROPERTY By: Sierra Jennings & Kemartie Davis

E XPLANATION OF FACTORING USING THE DISTRIBUTIVE PROPERTY Factoring by grouping is using the distributive property to factor a polynomial. Distributive property is also used to factor like binomials.

STEPS ON SOLVING FACTORING USING THE DISTRIBUTIVE PROPERTY: 4a²+12ab+ 2a² 1 st - Factor each monomial: 4a² = 2 2 a a 12ab= 2 2 3 a b Combine like Terms 2a²= 1 2 a a 2 nd – Write the GCF (greatest common factor) of the monomials on the outside of the parenthesis: GCF: 2a( ) + 2a()+ 2a() 3 rd – Put remaining factors in side of the parenthesis. 2a(2a) + 2a(6b) + 2a(1a)

STEPS ON SOLVING FACTORING USING THE DISTRIBUTIVE PROPERTY CONT. 4 th – After setting up this problem use the distributive property to solve it: 4a²+12ab+ 2a²= 2a(2a) + 2a(6b) + 2a(1a) = 2a(2a + 6b + a) The Answer Is: 2a(2a + 6b + a) If you want to check your answer: 2a(2a + 6b + 1a) = 4a² + 12ab + 2a²

6x²+14x First step: factor each monomial : 2* 3*x*x + 2*7*x Second step: figure out GCF (greatest common factor): 2x Third step: Use distributive property: 2x(3x + 7x)
