Why is the sky blue? Explain in your own words and in a complete sentence! Warm Up….
3
Why is the sky blue? (this is a review question to re-assess students’ understanding of light scattering). After a whole group discussion as to why the sky is blue, we will watch the video (link provided below) http://spaceplace.nasa.gov/blue-sky/ http://spaceplace.nasa.gov/blue-sky/ Warm Up….

_________________: light that bounces off a surface; causes it to change direction _______________: light that is bent when it travels from one substance into a different substance __________________: light that travels through a substance without being absorbed or scattered. ________________: light that is taken in by a material Review …. Write these statements and fill in the blank!
5
Reflection: light that bounces off a surface; causes it to change direction Refraction: light that is bent when it travels from one substance into a different substance Transmission: light that travels through a substance without being absorbed or scattered. Absorption: light that is taken in by a material Check your answers…
6
You will receive your test back along with a new tracking sheet…. Objective Box = Waves and Visible Light Test Record your score and shade in the appropriate number of boxes to match your score Pass your tests back (you can take them home, but I need them back next class!) Test back and review
7
Without moving your head, look up, Look down, Look all around, How can you do this with your eye? Parts of the Human Eye…
8
You have 6 muscles attached to your eyeball which allows you to move your eye so you can look in different directions without moving your head. Explanation
9
Turn in your notebook to “Parts of the Eye : 6.P.1.2 continued” Write these notes…. You have 6 muscles attached to your eyeball In Interactive Notebooks…
10
You received this handout before our Thanksgiving Break You will also receive a bucket of crayons (please do not knock these off your desks) We will continue with our color coding activity See teacher example Take out your Parts of the Eye Handout

Cow Eye Dissection Video If the video makes you uncomfortable, please simply put your head down on your desk. While we are watching, please act as scientists. This means, do not scream and shout, simply put your head down if something makes you uncomfortable. http://www.exploratorium.edu/learning_studio/cow_ eye/step01.html http://www.exploratorium.edu/learning_studio/cow_ eye/step01.html
14
You will complete it as we review the parts of the eye together…. Graphic Organizer: Parts of the Eye Handout

Cornea Pupil-Iris Lens Retina Optical Nerve Brain! Light in
16
Binocular Vision: humans have two eyes (the image from each eye is combined to give us the ability to determine distance) Field of Vision: determined by how much you can see without moving your head Write these notes in your notebook
17
3 Visible parts of the human eye: Pupil- the dark center Iris- the colored part (blue, green, brown, hazel) Sclera- white part Write these notes in your notebook:
18
We will count off from 1 -7 You will start in the station that matches the number you counted You will be trying to figure out “Who Am I” with the vocabulary you just learned Write your name and number your paper from 1 – 7 (half sheet of paper) You will read each statement and then list the part of the eye that matches the statement You will have 12 minutes to complete all 7 stations I will be taking this paper up at the end of 12 minutes! Rotation around the room..
19
The pupil: the dark hole in the center of the iris where light enters the eye bright light = the iris closes the pupil so less light gets in. dark conditions = the iris opens up the pupil so more light in The iris: muscle tissue which determines the size of the pupil (the blue, green, brown, or hazel part of the eye) Rotation Around the Room..
20
The sclera: the white part of the eyeball (tough, protective skin which covers the entire eyeball) The Cornea: the clear area over the iris and pupil (bends and focuses the light the light entering the eye towards the lens) Rotation Around the Room..
21
Lens: adjusted by small muscles to help us focus on things that are close and far away. Retina: contains the rods and cones where an upside down image is projected Rotation Around the Room..
22
Optic Nerve: sends information from the retina to the brain (image turned right side up by the brain) Rotation Around the Room..

the box is a model of your eye. Light enters through the opening in the front of your eye (the iris) and passes through a crystalline lens. The lens focuses the light into an image that falls on your retina (the inside of the back of your eye). When an image falls on the retina, nerve cells send signals to your brain which are interpreted to create an image. Cow Eye Dissection

Humans = 6 muscles controlling our eyeball (can look in different directions without moving our heads) Cows = 4 muscles controlling their eyeball (they can’t roll their eyes like you can) So cows have to turn their heads to look around! Cow Eye Video Dissection
