Expeditionary Learning ► Expeditionary Learning (EL) is a comprehensive K-12 educational design. Our approach combines rigorous academic content and real world projects -- learning expeditions -- with active teaching and community service. The EL design focuses on teaching in an engaging way. Faculty members receive intensive professional development in curriculum, teaching practices, and building a strong school culture.

Behavior Chart ► Each classroom has a color coded clip chart that students/teachers use to mark behavior. This chart goes home in the red homework folder each day for parents to review.

Fall Semester Expedition: People Matter Students will be learning about famous Georgians throughout history. Social Studies will be the primary focus in this Expedition, although Science standards will be addressed as well. Guiding Questions ► How does an individual change their community? ► How can a community change an individual? ► How does the work of historical figures impact everyday life? Field Studies will include the Atlanta History Center (In Their Moccasins: Journey of the Cherokee Native Americans), New Echota Historic Site, The Jimmy Carter Center, The King Center (Martin Luther King Jr), and Tellus Science Museum.

English Language Arts (Literacy Components) ► Guided Reading: reading in a small group with teacher support helping to develop skills and use reading strategies ► Shared Reading: reading a common book in a large or small group setting with comprehension questions ► Literacy Centers: independence or partner work with graphic organizers, grammar review, spelling practice, and literacy games ► Writer’s Workshop: developing writing through prompts and continued practice (includes brainstorming, drafts, editing, and final pieces)

Mathematics Geometry & Algebra Data Analysis & Probability Process Skills Number & Operations Measurement Our math program is called Harcourt Math. It is directly aligned with the GPS (Georgia Performance Standards). It provides strong skill building activities, progressive lessons, and differentiated homework.

Grading Guidelines ► 45% Classwork ► 30% Tests ► 20% Quizzes ► 5% Homework ► Students are required to read a book of their choice for at least 20 minutes every afternoon. Mark your child’s progress on their Reading Log. Weekly Reading Logs are given on Monday and should be returned on Friday. They count as a homework grade.

Visual Arts 2nd Grade has Art on a Cart with Ms. Dawn ► At Amana Academy art is an integral part of our curriculum. By making cross curricular connections with visual arts and a variety of subjects we are able to accommodate different learning styles and give students a diverse learning experience.

EEOB ► Promote civic and environmental responsibility through real-world applications, community service projects and partnerships and by fostering a global mindset with an appreciation for the natural world and the rich diversity of humanity with an emphasis on the interconnectedness of the two. ► Embrace the challenge. The Arabic Language at Amana Academy ► All the grades from Kindergarten to 8th grade follow the Modern Language standards of GA ► We use differentiation through all grades: Newcomers, Ongoing Levels ► We teach the language through thematic units ► Our focus in teaching the language is communicative approach. Speaking and communicating is emphasized. ► We integrate Arabic in the classroom Expeditions. ► Please remind your child to review Arabic for 5-10 minutes everyday (reading, revising, writing).
