INTRODUCTION TO THE SOUTH AFRICAN SCHOOLS ACT NO. 84 OF 1996 (AS AMENDED) Public schools - ordinary/special/focused schools School Governing Body Elections – - every three years / SGB Elections took place during March 2015 - parents in majority on the SGB, teachers, non- teaching staff, learners (in high school), principal - SGBs have responsibilities, roles and functions prescribed in the SASA A BRIDGE Community of Practice

SGBs Section 15 Status of Public schools Section 16 Governance & Professional Management Section 16A Functions and Responsibilities of principal Section 20 (1)(a) – Promote best interest of the school and strive to ensure its development through the provision of quality education for all learners at the school A BRIDGE Community of Practice

WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF THE LEGISLATION The principal must annually prepare a plan setting out how academic performance of the school will be improved This academic plan must be tabled at a governing body meeting by the principal reporting on the progress on the implementation of the plan SGB must support the principal, educators & other staff in the performance of their professional functions A BRIDGE Community of Practice

RESOURCES No Fee and Fee Paying schools SGB with SASA Section 21 functions must – - take all reasonable measures to supplement the resources supplied by the State in order to improve the quality of education provided by the school to all learners at the school School fund – all proceeds thereof and any other assets of the public school must be used only for – -educational purposes, at or in connection with such school A BRIDGE Community of Practice
