Two - Dimensional Shapes
Understanding Two - Dimensional Shapes 2- D Shapes

Angles An angle is the figure formed by two lines with the same endpoint.

Right Angle A right angle is an angle with a square corner.

Parallel Lines Parallel lines are lines that are the same distance apart. Parallel lines do not meet or intersect.

Plane Figures Plane figures are figures that are 2-dimensional.

Circle A circle is a curved plane figure in which every point is the same distance from the point at the center.

Polygon X A polygon is a 2-D figure that is closed and whose edges are all straight lines. X

Triangle A triangle is a shape with three sides and three angles.

Equilateral Triangle An equilateral triangle is a triangle with three equal sides and three equal angles.

Isosceles Triangle An isosceles triangle is a triangle with two equal sides.

Right Triangle A triangle with a right angle (a square corner).

Quadrilateral A quadrilateral is a shape that has 4 sides and 4 angles.

Kite A kite is a quadrilateral that looks like a kite -- with no parallel sides, but with two pairs of equal sides that are adjacent to each other.

Parallelogram A parallelogram is a figure that has four sides and each pair of opposite sides is equal and parallel.

Rhombus A rhombus is a parallelogram with four sides of the same length. A square is a special type of rhombus that has all square corners.

Square A square is a quadrilateral that has four equal sides and four right angles.

Rectangle A rectangle is a quadrilateral that has four right angles and each pair of opposite sides is parallel and the same length.

Trapezoid A trapezoid is a four-sided shape with only two opposite sides that are parallel.

5 Pentagon Regular Irregular A pentagon is a figure with five sides. If all angles and sides are equal, then it is regular, otherwise it is irregular.

6 Hexagon Irregular Regular A hexagon is a figure with six sides. If all angles and sides are equal, then it is regular, otherwise it is irregular.

Octagon 8 Regular Irregular An octagon is a figure with eight sides. If all angles and sides are equal, then it is regular, otherwise it is irregular.

Label each shape. Which of these shapes are plane figures? polygons? triangles? quadrilaterals? How many pairs of parallel lines can you find? How many right angles can you find? hexagon parallelogram circle trapezoid rhombus isosceles triangle pentagon octagon equilateral triangle
