3 All courses: regulated under Ontario Regulation 184/97 accredited by the Ontario College of Teachers will be entered on the candidate’s certificate of qualification degree credit courses count toward Advanced Bachelor’s Degree in Education may count for pay grid movement

4 Nipissing In-Service Program Over 5,000 registrations per year Equivalent of over 1000 full-time students Over 250 instructors Among largest programs in the province Office located at the Monastery Hall campus

5 Additional Basic Qualifications Additional Basic Qualification courses are courses that lead to qualification in a division beyond the two that are part of your BEd program – Primary ABQ – Junior ABQ – Intermediate ABQ (various teachable electives) – Senior ABQ (various teachable electives)

6 Additional Qualification Courses Focus in on specific areas to expand on qualifications One session and Three-session courses Three-session courses lead to specialist designation (e.g., Special Education, ESL, FSL, Guidance, Cooperative Education, Visual Arts, Reading, etc.)

7 Modes of Delivery Face-to-Face – May/June Intersession – North Bay or Brantford campuses – 8 areas across Ontario Area Coordinator in each location Brantford/Waterloo, North Bay/Parry Sound, Renfrew County, Sault Ste. Marie, Simcoe/Muskoka, Sudbury, Timmins, York Region Spring, Summer, Fall/Winter, Winter/Spring

8 Modes of Delivery (continued) Print Correspondence – Spring/Summer (May to August) – Fall/Winter (October to March) – Winter/Spring (January to May) – Printed course package – Access to Instructor through email and phone – Assignments usually sent to instructor through email

9 Modes of Delivery (continued) On-line - currently use Blackboard/WebCT – Participation on a discussion board – Asynchronous communication (no set times, no chat rooms, use discussion board on your own time) – Shorter in length than correspondence – More intensive – Spring/Summer (late May to August) – Fall/Winter (October to January) – Winter/Spring (January to April)

14 2010 June On-site Intensive Courses Special Education Part 1 (practicum arranged by student – often precedes in-class portion) French as a 2 nd Language, Part I* Pre-requisite – successful completion of an oral/written french proficiency test (practicum arranged by student – often precedes in-class portion) May 31 – June 25, 2010

16 Distance Education Courses – On-line and Correspondence Completed independently at home (must meet assignment deadlines) On-line or print correspondence delivery Experienced part-time instructors Longer completion time than on-site Other students in the course may be experienced teachers Count toward future AdEd degree Cannot be fast-tracked

20 Admission Requirements ABQ Senior or Intermediate Current BEd student in good standing (in either the P/J or J/I divisions) Application with the Ontario College of Teachers must be in-progress – will need to provide OCT # to register – Login to WebAdvisor – Choose Teachers or Masters Students Menu – Click on Register OCT Number

21 Admission Requirements ABQ Primary Current BEd student in good standing in either Junior/Intermediate or Intermediate/Senior Application with the Ontario College of Teachers is in-progress No teachable subjects are required

22 Teachable Subject Requirements - Intermediate Intermediate ABQ -requires three full undergraduate courses in one teachable subject Course has a Core (Methods) and Elective (Teachable) component Required to check your teachable eligibility with the Office of the Registrar before registering

23 Teachable Subject Requirements - Senior Senior ABQ requires five full undergraduate courses in one teachable subject Only one teachable required for Senior ABQ Course has core component and teachable elective component If you wish to get a second teachable, three full undergraduate courses are required in the second teachable subject area – have to take the full course again (i.e., must repeat the core) Required to check your teachable eligibility with the Office of the Registrar before registering

24 Fees Provide your credit card information when registering on-line, or If paying by cheque or cash, fees must be paid to the Finance Office within two days of registration $895 per course – payable at time of registration

25 Reporting Course Results Grade available on WebAdvisor University Transcript sent to you Reported by university to OCT in late August Not recorded on first certificate issued by college Will appear on public register in September/October and on subsequent certificates Must complete the application process and be an OCT member (with certificate in hand) to record your course
