These words, as well as many others, came into English from other languages. Words borrowed from other languages can be tricky to decode because in other languages letters often stand for different sounds than they do in English.

3 FrenchJapaneseIndianSpanish plateaubonsaibanglefiesta quiche In French words like plateau, the letter pattern eau usually stands for the long sound of o. In French words like quiche, the consonant digraph ch usually stands for /sh/. In Japanese words like bonsai, the vowel pattern ai usually stands for the long sound of i. Many Indian words have consonant digraphs like the ng in bangle. In Spanish, the letter i usually stands for long e, as in fiesta.

4 Look at the words below as they come up. As I point to each word, think about how you would decode the word. When I point to you, say the word out loud. clichépatiobungalow samurainouveau

5 Independent Practice Look through other texts to find two examples of borrowed words. Write the words and confirm their pronunciations in the dictionary (or on Dictionary.com)
