These words, as well as many others, came into English from other languages. Words borrowed from other languages can be tricky to decode because in other languages letters often stand for different sounds than they do in English.

In French words like quiche, the consonant digraph ch usually stands for /sh/. In Japanese words like bonsai, the vowel pattern ai usually stands for the long sound of i. Many Indian words have consonant digraphs like the ng in bangle. In Spanish, the letter i usually stands for long e, as in fiesta.
