1 Types of Nouns Definition: A noun identifies a person, place, thing, or idea. Nouns may be labeled as more than one “type”. Common represents any place, object, or idea that is not formally named(not capitalized). Examples: desk, room, person, thought Proper any person, place or object that is formally named and capitalized. Examples: Susan Callahan, Delaware, Prudential Insurance Company

2 Concrete- any tangible item(things that can be felt or
touched) that can be detected by sight or touch. Examples: tree, child, picture Abstract items that cannot be detected by sight or touch. They may affect your sense of smell, your imagination, or thought process. Examples: an idea, a dream, a memory, an emotion ~love, music, wisdom Collective when the word represents a collection or group of objects or people. Examples: team, faculty, family

3 Possessive- the noun shows ownership by using an
apostrophe, and this may be in singular or plural form. Examples: (singular) a puppy’s collar (plural) the men’s shirts Singular- one person, place, or thing discussed. It may also be one group of something. Examples: Andy, class, sign Plural- when there is more than one person, place, or thing. These nouns may change form. Examples: woman women person people

4 Compound- when two or more nouns are placed together
to form one item. The word may be written as one or more words and may also be hyphenated. Examples: baseball, drive-thru, Newtown Middle School
